One Day Symposium
Predicting the Service Life of Organic Coatings – Options and Constraints
21 January 2009, Hampton, UK

Predicting the Service Life of Organic Coatings

Symposium Programme Now Available

The coatings industry is undergoing considerable change in responses to legislative action, and the emergence of new technologies, hence the need for sound predictive methodologies is higher than ever before.

This Symposium will provide a forum to present some of the methods used to investigate durability and service life in the context of alternative investigation strategies.

Eight papers have been selected for this purpose but delegates are strongly encouraged to make additional short contributions and to participate in the concluding discussion. The issue to be discussed is whether alternative strategies — for example, phenomenological, scientific or reliability based — can be harmonised. Do they meet the needs of the coatings industry in a cost effective manner? If not, what are the gaps and what should be done to fill them?

The symposium programme can be seen on our website: www.pra-world/conferences.

Irfab Multi-client Study: Specialist and Functional Architectural Coatings Market 2008–2018

Specialist and Functional Architectural Coatings Market 2008-2018

The Specialist and Functional Architectural Coatings Market study will be the first of its kind on the European and Middle Eastern Markets providing a unique source of data and insights on this fragmented sector. It is intended to concentrate on the architectural coatings with functional properties.

The study will bring you the benefit of this vital information base when formulating your global strategies – from technology to marketing. It will enable you to identify both the threats from competing technologies and future opportunities. Thus, the report will represent a reference guide for your long term strategic planning and provides a basis for more detailed segmental analysis.

The scope of the study will include Industrial, Commercial, Institutional, Residential, and Recreational Buildings. Systems with additional functional purposes to the expected aesthetic and protective properties of coatings will be described in the study. Whilst an overview will be given on the global market for architectural and decorative coatings, analysis of standard interior paints, and Do It Yourself ‘DIY’ market will not be included.

PRA Multi-client Evaluation: EU Decorative Gloss Paints for 2010

PRA Multi-client Evaluation: EU Decorative Gloss Paints for 2010

Background

The deadline for implementation of Phase II of the EU Paint Products Directive, 2004/42/EEC is 1 January, 2010. This Directive sets VOC emission limits for different product categories of decorative paint. The product category where the legislation will have the most impact is "Interior and exterior trim and cladding paints for wood and metal" or, in brief, "Gloss Paint".

Benefits

The project will provide a comprehensive independent performance evaluation of products formulated to be compliant with the new 2010 VOC limits. This will give subscribers timely benchmarking data versus competition.

Subject to satisfactory performance, commercial products will eligible for inclusion on the Master Painters Institute (MPI) & PRA European Approved Product List.

It is intended to evaluate all of the available technologies including:-

  • High Solids alkyds
  • Alkyd Emulsions
  • Acrylic Emulsions
  • Acrylic/alkyd and Acrylic/air-cure hybrids
  • Acrylic/Polyurethane Emulsions

The Process

This study is open to raw material suppliers, paint manufacturers and distributors who wish to have products evaluated. Participants are invited to submit 1 litre sample(s) of 2010 compliant white gloss paint for inclusion in the comparative testing project.

PRA will test all samples submitted on a comparative basis for performance in laboratory and practical application properties. Test results and technology types will be reported anonymously for each paint: suppliers will only know the identities of their own samples.

The testing schedule will include Compositional Comparisons, Laboratory Tests and Application Properties (tested on a primed, interior moulded door)

Training Course: Powder Coating Technology

27–28 January 2009 and 2–3 June 2009

Powder Coating Join us on this intensive two day course seeks to gain a clear understanding of all aspects of powder coating technology.

The course includes an insight into the formulation and manufacture of coating powders, both thermoplastic and thermosetting. Particular emphasis is given to coating selection (based on the anticipated requirements of the end user), outdoor exposure, corrosion resistance and costs benefits associated with powder coating. Application techniques are discussed in-depth from simple fluidised bed dipping to fully automated electrostatic systems.

Health, safety and environmental issues are covered for both the manufacturing and application processes.

Powder CoatingPractical Session

The course includes a half-day practical session at a nearby powder coating installation, where there will be opportunities to apply coating powders, understand application parameters, and test coatings in production conditions.

Who Should Attend

This course will be particularly useful to those responsible for the introduction and use of coating powders and for those, who on a day-to-day basis, wish to apply them efficiently and effectively.

Report: PRA's 6th International Wood Coatings Congress

Amsterdam 14-15 October 2008

More than 170 delegates attended the Congress, an increase of 12% over the average for past Congresses. This growing popularity shows that interest in the topic continues to be strong. The lively discussions which took place during the breaks confirmed the unique value of the Congress as a meeting place for building contacts in the woodcoatings industry.

In the first of the 35 papers presented, Jon Graystone analysed the major technical developments over the past 10 years, by reviewing the papers given at the previous five congresses, supported by market trend data from PRA's Managing Director, Jonathan Bourne. A number of papers described current work at the Wood Research Institutes in Europe and the US, including Fraunhofer-WKI, Holzforschung Austria, FCBA, Institute of Wood Technology Dresden, Ghent University, SP Traetek, and the USDA Forest Products Laboratory.

Notable contributions on new technology for interior and exterior woodcoatings were presented by BASF, Ciba, Rohm and Haas, Bayer MaterialScience, Merck, Nuplex Resins, BYK, Grace, Cytec Surface Specialties, and Cray Valley.

A full set of the papers is available in CD format (and a limited number of printed copies) for £180 (PRA members £130). To order a copy please use our Proceedings Order Form
